Belonging
Condition for meaningful engagement
The Community Learning Ecosystem (CLE) explores how spaces, structures, and forms of participation can be intentionally designed to reveal and cultivate the conditions for a sustainable learning ecosystem. Rather than treating learning as something delivered, CLE focuses on how learning emerges through participation, relationships, and shared context.
As part of this exploration, a range of initiatives are developed and examined as sites of practice. One such example is Cultural Exchange, a community-based initiative designed to create spaces where people share their lived experiences, cultures, and stories.
Observations from Cultural Exchange suggest that participation is shaped not only by programme design, but by how individuals experience the space itself. Shifts in how a space is structured can influence who feels able to enter and take part.
Taken together, these observations suggest that belonging develops when individuals experience the space as receptive to their presence and contribution. It is not simply about being present, but about feeling part of the shared environment, where one's presence is welcomed and one's contribution can find a place.
